Module Spec 3.0
Seismic Fault Navigation
Encountering unknown geological fault zones presents the highest mechanical and financial risk during subterranean excavation. TBMs are frequently outfitted with advanced seismic prediction systems (TSP - Tunnel Seismic Prediction) to mitigate these friction anomalies before physical contact.
Acoustic Velocity Mapping
By detonating minor explosive charges within the tunnel wall and recording the reflected seismic waves via geophones, geotechnical engineers can map changes in acoustic velocity. Hard, intact rock (high velocity) contrasting sharply with crushed fault gouge (low velocity) yields a 3D structural model up to 150 meters ahead of the cutting face.
| Strata Category | P-Wave Velocity (m/s) | RMR Rating | TBM Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Granite (Intact) | 4500 - 6000 | 80 - 100 | Open Mode |
| Fractured Limestone | 2500 - 4000 | 40 - 60 | Semi-Closed |
| Fault Gouge / Clay | 1000 - 2000 | < 20 | Closed EPB Mode |
Once a fault zone is identified, the machine initiates forward-probing drills directly through the cutterhead, allowing chemical polyurethane grouts to be injected into the fracture network, effectively consolidating the ground prior to excavation.
